The latter term is widely used in the West and South; the former is a better name, more applicable to a useful animal. Cattle were brought here in 1609 from the West Indies; in 1625 from Holland; in 1627 from Sweden; in 1631 from Denmark. The old Den- marks were light yellow; the Dutch black and white; the Spanish and Welsh generally black; the Devons red. The latter were the foundation stock in some states. Denmark crossed with Spanish made a dark.
