The name of Washington was first given,July 4, 1788, to that part of the street between the Roxburyline and Dover St. In 1824 it was applied to the whole lengthfrom Roxbury to Dock Sq., where the street then ended, re-placing the names Cornhill (Dock Sq. to School St.), MarlboroSt. (School to Summer), Newbury St. (Summer to Essex), andOrange St. (Essex to Dover).
