John Wesley

John Wesley was born in 1703 and educated at Christ Church, Oxford University, and became a Fellow of Lincoln College where he established a Bible study group whose method of bible study caused the name ‘Methodists’ to be coined. He became an Anglican priest and theologian and with his brother Charles founded the evangelical Methodist Church in England. Wesley fought to bring more working people into the church and began to speak in open areas to large crowds which became known as Field Preaching. He was a tireless preacher and campaigner for social justice and causes such as prison reform, universal education and the abolition of slavery. He adapted the Book of Common Prayer for use by American Methodists and wrote the Wesley Covenant Prayer. There are 70 million Methodists today across the globe. Wesley died in 1791.
