The spring can be set to any desiredtension, and its action can further be regulated by a brake ontop of the wheel, which is tightened or loosened by turning ascrew in the face-plate. The Shumard sash-balance is madefor runs of from thirty-two to forty-six inches, and for sashesof from eight to forty pounds weight. One advantage which all of these spring-balances possess is,. that they act most strongly when the sash is clown, enablingone to move a binding window more readily than if it werehung with ordinary weights and cords, while, when the sash isup, the springs barely suffice to hold it in position and do notoffer resistance to drawing down, as is the case with objection, of course, is, that the springs are in constant ten-sion, and will, in time, loose their elasticity. They can be re-placed quite as easily as worn-out ropes ; still, most peopleseem to, prefer the old-fashioned weights and pulleys. SASH-CORD ATTACHMENTS AND WEIGHTS.
