Road side signs designed to make drivers aware that Kiwis may be encountered in the area. The signs are near the West Coast settlement of Okarito. Okarito is a very ecologically aware town and tries to be an area to help increase kiwi numbers. The dense bush of the area provides an ideal habitat for the birds to live and breed in. Kiwis, being both nocternal and flightless are highly vunerable to traffic. Dogs, allowed to run free in the bush, are also a threat to the birds. Hopefully in Kiwi aware areas such as Okarito New Zealand's National Bird can both survive and thrive.
