JOHN WILLS. John Wills, Chief of Battalion No. 2,has a long record as a fire-fighter, havingjoined the department in 1867, the yearafter it went into service under its reor-ganized system. Battalion Chief Willshails from New York, where he was bornin the year 1848. a year charged withgreat revolutionary movements in differ-ent parts of the world. In 1852 arrived in San Francisco. To allintents and purposes he is a Native Son, 144 SAN FRANCISCO FIREMEN for he was educated here, and all thedearest and most cherished associationsof his life have been formed JOHN WILLS, B. C. For 33 years he has been a member ofthe Fire Department, and in that periodof time has battled with conflagrationsinnumerable, and won his way to hispresent position by sheer merit. He enjoys the unique distinction ofbeing the first member of the departmentwhose name is inscribed on the Roll ofHonor, his name standing at the head ofthe small but distinguished list of heroeswhose names and the record of theirachievement are inscribed thereon. Heis the holder of the much-coveted andhighly prized Scannell medal, which wasawarded him on August 20, 1896, forhaving, at great personal risk of his ownlife, rescued and saved the life of BessieF. Wilson and of Mrs. Ernest Silverstein,the latter of whom died while beingcarried out of a collapsed and burningbuilding at No. 22 Fifth street, June 22,1896. THOMAS M. FERNANDEZ. Thomas M.
