George M. Whitesides (born 1939), American chemist, holding paper microfluidic devices. Whitesides is Professor of Chemistry at Harvard University, USA. He heads the Whitesides Research Group, which researches subjects including nanotechnology, proteomics, cell biology, optics and microfluidics. His paper microfluidic devices, or lab-on-a-chips, are cheap, disposable devices that could one day be used to diagnose diseases such as AIDS and malaria in third world countries.
