Peyote cactus. View of the Mexican peyote (peyotl) cactus, Lophophora williamsii. Here, the globular and succulent stem is seen growing close to the ground, usually containing eight lobes. The flesh of this cactus contains the hallucinogenic drug mescaline. Long used as an intoxicant by various indian groups, the peyote cactus is either chewed or drunk as an infusion known as mescal. The shape of this plant and its drug properties gives it the name: \Mescal button\"."
