Thence Cook sailed south as far as Cape Turn-again, where, turning to the north, he coasted almostcompletely round the island. He spent some time atthe Thames, where he was struck with the majestyof the kahikatea (white pine) trees. Roundingthe North Cape he sailed down the WestCoast and refitted in Ship Cove in QueenCharlotte Sound. Afterwards he sailed throughthe straits between the two islands, andestablished the fact that the large inlet intowhich Tasman had sailed was no mere arm of thesea, but a strait which has since borne the name CookStrait. Reaching the East Coast he sailed as farnorth as Cape Turnagain, then heading south, hesailed right round the South Island passing to thesouth of Stewart Island, which he imagined to bepart of the larger island. He tried to enter DuskySound, but was prevented by bad weather and sailedon northwards, and, on reaching the western entranceto Cook Strait, turned away towards Australia. Hedescribed
