He was charged with heresy, tor-tured, hung and finally burned with his writingson the spot where his statue now stands in thePlace Maubert. This square is on the left bank, but the usualplace for executions was the Greve in front ofthe Hotel de Ville. Near the Halles was a pil-lory which Francis rebuilt a quarter of a centuryafter the people had destroyed it.
