But with all the difficulties with which he had tocontend, he succeeded in the object of his mission to the time he had command he was obliged to hold numer-ous conferences with Indian deputations, to keep scouting partiesconstantly in the field to guard against being surprised by a lurkingand wily enemy, besides guarding the transportation of provisionsup the river. This latter duty was in some respects more exactingand tr\-ing than fighting the enemy, as it would not do for a mo-ment to have communication with his base of supplies broken. As we are about to enter upon a new era at the fort, it mayprove of interest to the reader to know the exact strength of thegarrison at the time Captain Shippen assumed command, thereforethe following report, under date of January i, 1758, is copied infull: 266 HISTORY OF THE WEST BRANCH HISTORY OF THE WEST BRANXH VALLEY. 267 Out of the whole number of men reported it will be observedthat 232 were fit for duty. And a statement was also appended tothe report showin<^ the following officers absent on leave: Cap-tain Thomas Lloyd, Lieutenants Charles Garraway and NathanielMiles, Ensigns Charles Broadhead and William Patterson. Cap-tain Jameson was absent on other duty, and Colonel Burd andCaptain Hambright had just departed on a tour of inspection. Under date of January 20, 1758, Captain Shippen forwardedthe foregoing report to Colonel Burd, and in his letter of transmit-tal stated that he had restricted the garrison to an allowan
