Horses being washed in the river at Appleby Horse fair June 2007

Every year gypsy and travelling folk meet at Appleby Horse fair In Cumbria to deal horses, a great fair has sprung up around the event and it is now a huge attraction for visitors as well as the gypsies themselves. Horses are raced along a narrow track at breakneck speed in order to show them off to prospective buyers. It is a relatively "lawless" gathering at which needs to be policed very sensitively. A defenite sense of things happening outside of the law is experienced by the visitor along with the sense that things happen differently in this world. It is also a tradition to wash the horse by riding them into the river in the midlle of town.
