Science fiction story, 19th-century artwork. This artwork accompanied the republication in serial form of part of an early French science fiction story 'Ignis' (1883). Written by the French author Didier de Chousy, the story centred on the efforts of a group of scientists and engineers to harness the power of the Earth's central fires. It also touched on themes of dystopia and future technologies. Artwork from the 17th volume (first period of 1896) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
