It was attended ty prac-tically all the other sovereigns of Europe, including Victorias grandson,the German emperor, and it brought together, for the first time, thestatesmen of the widely scattered dominions beyond the seas. Oneshould have in mind all this splendor and power of the empress-queenwhen one looks at this picture of the young girl who was roused fromher sleep on June 20, 1837, by the Archbishop of Canterbury andanother official, to be told of the death of her uncle, William IV, andher accession to the throne. Victoria received them with quiet dignity,although clad in wrapper and shawl, with her hair falling over hershoulders and her feet hurriedly thrust into Queen Victoria notified uf iikk Accession * Great Britam and her Empire 653 navigation laws and protective duties were done away with.
