New River Channel south of Green Lanes Stn. Stoke Newington-Islington, 1874 map

'New River Channel south of Green Lanes Station'. Artist/engraver/cartographer: Stanford's Geographical Establishment, Charing Cross, London. Provenance: Sixth Report of the Commissioners appointed in 1868 to inquire into the Best Means of Preventing the Pollution of Rivers. The Domestic Water Supply of Great Britain. Presented to both House of Parliament by Command of Her Majesty. London: Printed by George Edward Eyre & William Spottiswoode, printers to the Queen's Most Excellent Majesty. For Her Majesty's Stationery Office. 1874. Type: Antique map with original hand colour. The map shows the "New River" in London between Manor House and Rosebery Avenue, passing through Stoke Newington & Islington, passing close to Angel, Canonbury & St John Street. The New River is neither new nor a river - a joke that is almost as old as the water course itself. It was built between 1609 and 1613 to bring water from Amwell and Chadwell springs in Hertfordshire to London.
