Illustration of the US chemist Robert Grubbs (1942-2021). Grubbs is best known for his work on catalysts for olefin metathesis. Olefin metathesis, which was first described by Yves Chauvin in the 1970s, is an organic reaction involving the redistribution of fragments of alkenes (olefins) by the breaking and forming of carbon-carbon double bonds. Grubbs developed catalysts that carried out the reactions more efficiently, allowing manufacturers to make organic compounds, including some plastics and medicines, at lower pressures and temperatures, using fewer hazardous and expensive chemicals, and producing fewer contaminants and harmful waste products. Chauvin and Grubbs were awarded the 2005 Nobel Prize in Chemistry along with Richard Schrock, who also developed catalysts for olefin metathesis.
