Durnham Cathedral, looking north east from from Elvet Banks area of River Wear. Spectacular Norman cathedral founded 1093. Built on highly defensible bend in the River Wear. Contains the tomb of the Venerable Bede and the remains of St Cuthbert. On the last day of 1540 Durham priory was surrendered to the Crown & Cuthbert's shrine - said to be 'one of the most sumptuous monuments in all England' - was robbed & dismantled. The saint's incorrupt body was examined, kept in the vestry for a while and then, on the orders of Henry VIII, reburied below a plain marble slab. In 1650 medieval wooden furnishings were destroyed by Cromwell's prisoners who were housed in the Cathedral after the battle of Dunbar.
