Carrying twin tracks of the Tyne and Wear Metro System 30 metres above the Ouseburn valley the 815 metre long viaduct was designed by Ove Arup and Partners and built by John Mowlem and Company It was the first major bridge in the UK to be constructed by using cantilevered construction with the countercast precast segments being jointed with epoxy resins prior to being stressed together The bridge was opened in 1978
