Tomato. -Sow in hot-bed in early sprim To mates or the seed may be sown in shallow boxes and placed in a window, when one does not wish to have the trouble of making a hot-bed. Trans- plant to the open ground when all danger of frost is past, setting the plants 3 or 4 feet apart each way. Some support should always be provided for the vines, ,„. to keep the fruit from touching the ||jg ground. (See the tomato supports quo- jjjj ted and illustrated, page 57 of this cata- logue.) Fruit may be had several weeks weeks earlier by sowing the seed quite early, and transplanting to small pots ; when these are filled with roots, shift to a larger size, and transplant to open ground when the weather is warm and settled, shading from the sun for a day or so. As the roots are not disturbed in taking plants from the pots, the plants suffer no check, but grow right on. Skillful cultivators, by selecting and hybridizing, have greatly improved the Tomato. 1618 The Democrat (For description, see Novelties) perpkt., 10 cts. 1619 The Autocrat (For description, see Novelties) per pkt., 10 cts. 7620 The Aristocrat (For description, see Novelties) 1621 Thorhurn Terra Cotta.
