Light micrograph in interference contrast illumination of spores of a Penicillium sp. fungus. The use of Penicillium as a bactericide was first proposed in 1928 by Fleming et al. Penicillin was initially isolated from P. notatum, but is now produced from selected strains of P. chrysogenum. Several branched conidiophores are seen, sometimes called penicilli (from Latin - 'small brush'). Magnification x200 at 35mm size.
