Nicolas Jean de Dieu Soult, 1804, (1839). 'Soult (Jean de Dieu) duc de Dalmatie, Maréchal de France'. Portrait of Nicolas Jean de Dieu Soult (1769-1851),1st Duke of Dalmatia. Soult, the Hand of Iron, was a French general and statesman, named Marshal of France in 1804. He was one of only six officers in French history to be promoted to the rank of Marshal General of France. He also served as Prime Minister of France three times.
