Lawrence established a strong business foundation by importing dry goods from England as soon as peace was restored in Europe in 1815. He was a member of the Board of Directors building committee for the Bunker Hill Monument Association. In June 1831, Lawrence became ill, retired from active participation in the firm, and devoted the rest of his life to correspondence, family life, and philanthropy
