Downy young: Forehead and sides of head yellowish buff; black middle stripe from upper base of upper mandible to crown, one from bill to below eye, one from bill to eye and another from above eye to upper ear-region, black; crown mottled black and tawny and dotted with irregular creamy tufts; nape yellowish-buff; upper body like crown but mixed with yellowish-buff; fore neck like sides of head; remaining under plumage white. Measurements. — Length to in.; spread to ; folded wing to ; tail to ; bill to ; tarsus to Weight 2 to 4 oz. (B. H. Warren). Much variation in size; male larger than female. Molts. —Apparently juvenal plumage is retained through first winter, the only change being result of fading and wear; white margins of back and scapulars grad- ually wear away; prenuptial molt in late winter and spring is succeeded by a dress similar to that of adult breeding plumage and after complete molt the next fall young bird becomes practically indistinguishable from adult winter; adults have an incomplete prenuptial molt in spring and a complete postnuptial molt in autumn.
