Gaius Marius was a Roman general and statesman. He held the office of consul seven times. He was on the side of the Populares, and the fight with the Optimates became bitter. Marius' greates adversary was the Optimates statesman Sulla. Marius was chosen over Sulla to lead the army against Mithridates and Sulla was infuriated. When Sulla marched on Rome in 88 , Marius went into exile, pictured here, in north Africa. Sulla then took command and headed east to fight mithridates. Marius returned to Rome.
