Mary Martin and Carol Channing at the Willard Hotel, Washington, ; The night before the newly restored Willard Hotel opened in 1986 Carol Highsmith was photographing the Willard Hotel interior. Famous actresses, Mary Martin and Carol Channing were performing in a play at the National Theatre next door and there was a fire alert. They came over to the Willard until the all clear, and posed for Highsmith in the newly renovated lobby.;
