Femoral Hernia.—The inguino-crural triangle is separated from the inguino-abdominal, as above stated, by Pouparts ligament. In its upper part, whichlies along the course of the great blood-vessels, are found the femoral or cruralhernias. The etiology of femoral hernia is less perfectly understood than that ofinguinal hernia. The part played by a congenital defect of the sac or ring is. Fig. 223.—The Andrews Operation. The drawing shows the manner of using the hernia retractor in posterior imbrication. (Original.) not commonly recognized. Some modern writers, as Wuellstein, deny thatfemoral hernia is ever congenital or that it occurs in early life. On the otherhand, many observations give weight to the claim that abnormal peritonealtubes or pouches do sometimes appear along the track of the vessels, and thatthese abnormahties are congenital mesoblastic prolongations in foetal life. Theoccurrence of a scrotal femoral hernia, or the finding of the broad ligament ina femoral canal, points to the probable participation of an embryological factorin the production of some of these hernias. Anatomy.—The anatomical layers are the same externally in this form asin inguinal hernia, namely, skin and external fasciae. Ljmiph nodes are morenumerous, as are also venous branches in the subcut
