Whaling Ships Abandoned in Arctic

In September 1871, the sea ice in the Arctic Ocean was much heavier than usual and forced the whalers—a fleet of 32 whaleships—to abandon their vessels (pictured here in this lithograph). The loss of so many ships dealt a devastating blow to the industry, especially to the owners, most all from New Bedford, Massachusetts.
