The di-versity of men of different races in theirmodes and purposes of action is amongthe most striking features by whichthey are discriminated. In what maybe called the spirit of adventure, for in-stance, the various races have had eachits own distinctive character and have taken to the water, chosenthe maritime lLe, sailed afar to distantcoasts and islands, and made the sea afamiliar spirit. To others, the oceanhas been a terror, while the continentalvastnesses have invited to explorationand even to peril. To other branches ofthe human family both sea and land haveappalled and paralyzed the adventurous. THE Hnls. They have settled into the safestand most convenient nooks, and shieldedthemselves from the opposing forces ofnature by what barriers soever theycould discover in a given environment. In these respects, we find again thatthe Ruddy races have been superior toThe Ruddy the correlated branches of races strongest fa human family. It can in the adventur- J ous disposition. not be said that their ad-venture has carried them as far as in thecase of the nomadic peoples of Asia—those great Turanians of the Brown racewho have drifted through all parts of thegreatest of the continents. But the ac-tivities of the Aryans have been char-acterized by greater energy and morerational method. Their migrations havebeen directed by a purpose, at least ahalf-formed purpose, to seek for
