. The railroad and engineering journal . ilding Company, of Cleveland, Ohio. Theengines are of the , direct-acting, jet-con-densing type, and are expected to work up to i,Soo indi-cated horse-power. Thethree cylinders are 24, 38 and 61 , respectively, having a common stroke of 42 bed plate is of deep box pattern, cast in two parts, with the joint running athwartship, and carries the fivejournals of the crank shaft, which is in Uvc pieces with solid coupling between the intermediate and low pressureengines. The journals on this shaft are 12 in. in diameterThe three crank pins are of mild steel, wyi in. in dia-meter, with lo-in. bearings. The three cranks are alldouble throw, and are made of forged iron. The connect-ing rods are of forged iron with straps, gibbs and keys ineach end. The slides arcof mild steel, bolted to columnsin the center line of the engine, fore and aft, except theforward slide of the intermediate engine, which is re-moved from the column far enough to admit the placing of. the link and connections between the slide and the links for the first and third cylinders are placed out-side the columns. The eight columns carrying the cylin-ders are of box section cast in pairs and bolted togetherthrough the fore-and-aft girts. The small or high-pressure cylinder is fitted with a pis-ton valve, and the other two cylinders—the intermediateand low-pressure—with slide valves, all being very easy ofaccess for examination and repairs. The air pump is ofthe ordinary single-acting bucket arrangement, 28 in. indiameter and 17 in. stroke, and is so planned that anyvalve may be reached by taking off its cover. The con-denser is of cast-iron, 35 in. in diameter and fitted withjet spray. Vol. LXI, No. 0.] The propeller is four-bladed and is 13 ft. diameterand \7% ft- lead. Tiie engine is supplied witli steam from two boilers ofthe Scotch type. Each boiler is 12 ft. diameter and 14 , and has three 40-in. furnaces.
