Montage illustration of Earth, Mars and the European Space Agency's ExoMars spacecraft, which reached Earth orbit following its launch on 14 March 2016. The two spacecraft are the Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) and Schiaparelli (yellow), the ExoMars Demonstrator Module (EDM) lander. Controlled by ESOC (European Space Operations Centre), the ExoMars spacecraft will separate on arrival at Mars around seven months later in October 2016. TGO will look for methane in the Martian atmosphere. Schiaparelli will test landing technologies for the ExoMars rover (2018), and land scientific instruments on the surface.
