We could not always go, even when theschool was open. The big boys and girls muststay at home when there was work to do. Only the little children went then,for, of course, this was the time when all the bigones had to work THE BEST HIDING PLACE. A woman taught this school. People thoughta woman could not teach big boys, because shewas not strong enough to thrash them. I fear that many of the children learned butlittle in our old-time schools. The bright oneswould learn pretty fast, as the master heard themsay their lessons as often as they wished. Theslow ones learned almost nothing.
