On re-ceiving his early education in thepublic schools of his native city, heentered St. IMarys College, gradu-ating therefrom in 1883 with the de-gree of Bachelor of Arts. Later heattended Santa Clara College, wherehe took his degree of Ph. D. Early deciding upon the law ashis chosen profession, he appliedhimself diligently to his legal studiesand in 1887 was admitted to the barof California at San Francisco. Heimmediately engaged in practice in?J this city, and froml887 to 1898, withthe exception of an interval of twoyears spent as Justice of the Peace, was in partnership with James under the firm name of Smith & Murasky. He was elected Justice of the Peace of San Francisco in 1888,remaining in that office until 1890. In 1898 he was first elected tothe Superior Bench, and has served continuo
