Ganesa (also spelled Ganesha)—the remover of obstacles—is one of the most widely revered deities in the Hindu pantheon.
Ganesa (also spelled Ganesha) is one of the most widely revered deities in the Hindu pantheon. Ganesa is worshiped as the Remover of Obstacles, the Lord of Beginnings, patron of arts and sciences, and the god of intellect and wisdom. He is depicted with the head of an elephant, a big belly, and usually four arms. Here three musicians play as a young woman dances - all in honor of the deity. Ganesa is often shown attended by a rat, as here. This illustration is from "India and Its Inhabitants" by Caleb Wright 1855.
