The Lineff Electric Railway. The Lineff system has obtained special promi-nence by the report of INIr. Dear Sir,—I have examined and tested theelectrictramway line on the Lineff system, whichhas been laid down for experimental purposes atthe Chiswick depot of your company. The transmission of power fromthe motor to the car wheels is by means of acountershaft and two Renolds chains, and, inthis respect, does not differ from that used onother electric cars. There are, however, twospecial appliances peculiar to the Lineff one is a movable dash board at each end ofthe car, which upon striking an obstacle auto-matically reverses the direction of rotation of themotor, and causes the car to run back; and theother is a magnetic brake. The object of the dash board and automaticreversing gear is to more quickly stop the car, ifthrough the negligence of the driver it shouldrjn into an obstacle. In this case the dash boardcauses the brake to go on, and the motor
