Moth fly. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a moth fly or owl midge (Psychoda sp.). The two large compound eyes (red) dominate the head. The hairy antenna project from between the eyes. The mouth parts, the mandibles (brown, hairy) and proboscis (dark brown), extend downwards from the centre of the head. Moth flies are tiny (5 millimetres long) flies that have hairy wings and bodies. The adults are often found in bathrooms. Eggs are laid in drains and sewage plants.
