Tooth decay. Computer artwork of a human tooth, showing a cavity (decay, dark) that has been caused by bacteria (blue and green). Tooth decay, also known as caries, is the demineralisation and destruction of the hard tissues (enamel, dentin and cementum) of a tooth. It is usually caused by acid produced by the bacterial fermentation of food debris that accumulates on the tooth surface.
