The locomotives, which were described in the ElectricRailway Journal for April 11, 1914, are equippedeach with two 75-hp slip ring induction motors. Eachof these, with all its gearing and clutches, is mountedupon the wheels independent of the frame of the loco-motive, to which it is connected only by the connection with each motor a powerful brake isinstalled; and, as the motors are at all times gearedeither to the axles or to the cog wheels, the truck wheelsare not provided with any brake rigging. The brake. But should the motor current beshut off, either intentionally or accidentally, the corewill instantly drop by gravity, and its weight willexert a heavy pressure upon the brake levers to stopthe motor and the locomotive. During the first three months of commercial oper-ation of the Canal, from Aug. 15 to Nov. 15, the cargotowed through the locks by the locomotives amountedto 1,079,521 tons. During the fiscal year ending June30, 1914, the Panama Railroad had carried 643,178 tonsof through freight
