The ancient city of Jiaohe Xinjiang Province China


Jiaohe's history dates back to the 2nd century BC. The huge earthern city is very well preserved and in its day it was a commercial centre and deeply Buddhist town. It was abandoned in the 13th century after the Mongol empire overran the city. Jiaohe is located very close to Turpan which was a stop on the northern branch of the Silk Road. The highest temperatures in China are recorded in the area.
