Peuerbach planetary model. These multiple celestial spheres and cycles, with Latin labels, demonstrate the 'sphaera octaua' planetary model proposed by Georg von Peuerbach (1423-1461), an Austrian astronomer whose 1472 work on planetary theories was an attempt to reconcile the theories of Aristotle and Ptolemy. The Latin also refers to the primum mobile, one of the outermost of the celestial spheres found in such models. This artwork is from the later work Commentaries on George Peurbach's New Theories of the Planets (1556) by the Austrian astronomer and scholar Erasmus Oswald Schreckenfuchs (1511-1579).
