John Fowler (1817-1898), British civil engineer. Fowler designed many railway bridges, including (with Benjamin Baker) the cantilever bridge over the Firth of Forth in Scotland. This kilometre long railway bridge was the first major structure made of steel. Construction took eight years from 1882-1890. Fowler also worked on extending the Metropolitan Railway in London, the world's first underground railway. He was created a baronet in 1890. Artwork from the 5th volume (first period of 1890) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
