Coal dust explosion experiment at Altofts Colliery, Yorkshire, UK. Health and safety research in the UK started with investigations in the early 20th century into safety in mines. Experiments were carried out at locations such as these, helping to determine that coal dust was explosive under certain circumstances. Altofts Colliery was used for experiments in the first decade of the 20th century, prior to the establishment of the Home Office Experimental Station in 1911, the precursor to the later Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL).
