Veterinary research. Scientists examining the DNA sequence of a vaccine made from a modified Brucella abortus bacterium. This bacterium causes brucellosis disease in cattle, resulting in undulating fever and a high rate of abortion. The scientists have changed the virus slightly in the hope that it will still induce an immune response in livestock, allowing them to build up immunity, without causing the symptoms of brucellosis. This research was performed for the United States Department of Agriculture.
