Activists have barricaded themselves in the German "brown coal village" of Lutzerath in North Rhine-Westphalia. The activists have been occupying the village for more than two years to prevent it from being wiped off the face of the earth as agreed in a deal struck by the political. The energy company RWE mines lignite there, which activists blame for global warming and CO2 pollution. In the early morning, the police began to evacuate the village.
