Artist/engraver/cartographer: Le Père Placide de Sainte Hélène. Provenance: The map was extracted from a composite atlas of early 18th century maps, the latest of which was dated c1754. Type: Large uncoloured antique 18th century atlas map, printed on thick, good quality paper. The map covers the part of the Alps straddling the Duchy of Savoie (the present-day departements of Savoie and Hautes-Alpes in France), and the valleys of western Piedmont. The map includes the source of the River Po and its tributaries including the Waldensian Chisone and Pellice valleys, and the Dora Riparia valley. The Arc river valley through the Maurienne, and the upper part of the Durance river valley through Briançon comprise the westerly part of the the map on what is now the French side of the Alps. Other place names marked on the maps include the following towns and present-day mountain/winter sports/ski resorts (many have variations to the modern accepted spelling): Turin/Torino, St-Jean-de-Maurienne, St-Michel-Valloire, Modane, Briançon, l'Argentière-les-Ecrins, Montdauphin, Embrun, les Orres, Risoul, Vars, Montgenèvre, Bressans, Susa, Oulx, Pragelato, Bardonecchia
