Journ., 1910, ii. 589.) discovered that they sometimes produce changes in theskin known as X-ray burns, or X-ray dermatitis, which areextremely difficult to treat and in some instances becomecancerous. The alterations in the skin covered by the term X-raydermatitis may affect not only those who receive the raysdesignedly for the cure of local disease but also those whoapply them, and the latter appear to be the greater earliest changes consist of an erythema around thebase of the nails, which become brittle and degenerate intoshapeless masses. The skin reddens and small warts appear;11 258 EPITHELIAL TUMOURS cracks and ulcerated patches occur and refuse to heal. Theulcers and cracks are, extremely painful, and in a smallproportion of cases become malignant. Whilst these changesare progressing in the skin, the deeper tissues undergonutritional changes and the bones
