Viking Vessels Heading Up River
Vikings refer to the Norse sea-faring natives of lands known today principally as Scandinavia. They were especially known for their shipbuilding and sailing skills. Some were merchants; others, explorers; and others, raiders. Vikings raided the coasts of northern and western Europe from the eighth through the tenth century. Their vessels were distinctive, especially their warships. with the dragon figurehead at the bow. The theme of this painting, dating to 1916, shows Vikings heading up river in their vessels.
