In June, 1918, he was as-signed to the I 0th Field Artillery. Hisbattery moved into position early in commander was killed and LieutenantPope took charge. On July I 5th he washit by shell fragments. After twomonths in the hospital, he was strickenwith pneumonia, dying on October 1 8,1918. He was unmarried. LieutenantPope is survived by his parents, Mr. andMrs. William H. He then en-tered the employ of the New York LifeInsurance Company, which position herelinquished to enter the First OfficersTraining Camp at Fort Sheridan, where hewas assigned to the Fourth Company. Re-ceiving a commission as second lieutenant,he was ordered to Camp Custer and as-signed to the Headquarters Company ofthe 338th Infantry.
