(VII) Charles W. Hammond, son of Josiah (3)and Elizabeth (Moseley) , was born atHampton, Connecticut, April 27. 1794, died at Ash-ford, Connecticut, November 27, 1S51. He was educatedin the district schools and at Woodstock Academy. Hefarmed for a time in Hampton, also studied medicine,but did not finish his course. He later moved to thetown of Ashford, where he farmed until he died. Hemarried Artemisia Rindge, April 2, 1818, she born in1798, and died September 25, 1846. (VIII) Josiah (4) Hammond, second child ofCharles W. and Artemisia (Rindge) Hammond, was. BIOGRAPHICAL born May 21, 1821, in Ashford, Connecticut. Hereceived liis education in the district schools ofAshford, Connecticut, but being slightly deaf hedid not attend college like his brothers, but took tofarming, in Hampton, where he bought land, andprospered. He later moved to Ledyard, New Lon-don county, where he bought land and farmed, spe-cializing in small fruit raising and especially mstrawberries, in which occupation he became fa-mous, and was known as the Strawberry daughter, Clara M. (Hammond) McGuigan, stillowns part of the old farm in Hampton, and alsothe farm in Ledyard where her father raised hisfamous strawberries. Josiah (4) Hammond retiredin 1S85 and moved to Mystic, making his home atthe Oral School which his wife conducted for atime. He died at the school, February 25, 1895, hiswife dying in Putnam, Connecticut, January 31,1914. while on a visit there. Josiah (4) Hammondmarried (first) Ruth Maria S
