Surgical scars on the abdomen of a 65-year-old man after operations to repair a ruptured aortic aneurysm (scar down centre) and to bypass his femoral arteries (scars on groin). The aneurysm, in the abdominal portion of the man's aorta (main body artery), was a swelling in a weak area of the artery wall. The aneurysm ruptured, causing profuse bleeding into the abdominal cavity, and was replaced with an artificial graft. The femoral arteries supply blood to the legs. Blockages in the arteries restrict the blood flow, causing pain and tissue death. The arteries were bypassed with artificial tubes, which restored the blood flow to the man's legs.
