The AIDS Memorial Quilt on display in City College of New York in Harlem on World Aids Day, Thursday, December 1, 2011. Thirty years ago in1981 the Centers for Disease Control published it's first report on the HIV virus, which causes AIDS. The quilt was founded in 1987 with 60 blocks of the more than 40,000 panels being displayed in Shepard Hall in the college. According to the CDC almost 594,500 people have died of AIDS in the since the epidemic started.(© Richard B. Levine)
